Blue pottery does not look like anything else made in India, and that is because it is not technically pottery at all. There is no clay in it.
This blue pottery workshop in Jaipur introduces you to a technique that arrived with Persian craftsmen centuries ago and survives today in just a handful of family workshops. You learn the history, then paint a piece of your own.

What Happens in the Workshop
Your host explains why blue pottery is made from ground quartz rather than clay, and how this Persian technique found a permanent home in Jaipur under royal patronage centuries ago.
You select a plain, unfired piece — usually a tile, small bowl, or coaster — ready for painting. Your instructor shows you the traditional cobalt blue and white colour palette this craft is known for.
Using fine brushes, you paint a traditional floral or geometric pattern onto your piece. Your instructor guides your hand where needed, and most guests are painting confidently within the first twenty minutes.
Your piece needs to be fired in a kiln after the session, which takes a few days. We arrange for it to be delivered directly to your hotel before you leave Jaipur.
